That’s an interesting scenario Ben and of course something people need to consider. The benefit of these is the group together dynamic and the ease of use of multiple devices at once.

Sounding like a luddite myself, I would imagine the need to be continually connected for the odd time you aren’t all together is not a big deal vs having to each track down a SIM in your unlocked phones, choose a plan, create hotspots so you can use your laptop or tablet, deal with hotspotting draining your phone battery as your kids try to surf the web with their devices, etc. Conversely, the cost of just keeping your phone connected to your home plan is often astronomical the longer you’re out of your country and again you face the hotspot issue.

Bottom line, there’s always a trade off one way or another. The important part is to find the best solution for your particular problem. It might be a Wifi hotspot, virtual sim, satellite phone or who knows. Always good to have options though. Thanks for commenting.

How do you contact each other if you’re not both in hotspot range?
I can picture a scenario where one kid gets tired of the museum or whatever and so Wifey takes him back to the campervan. I stay with the other kid in the museum. If we only have one puck, how does it help us contact each other?
Thanks very much.
Ben

I just returned from Norway and found out the hard way that this device is out of date and travelers will most likely need to get the new Solis Lite or the even newer 5G option (coming out on June 1, 2023). The Skyroam Solis operates on a 3G network (Solis Lite is on a 4G network). The Solis website talks about how a customer can use their devices in all these countries, but it fails to let everyone know that 3G is being eliminated in most countries (especially Europe). The Skyroam Solis does NOT work in places without 3G. When I reached out to Solis customer service, they let me know that they have a list of countries that will not support 3G (i.e. a list of countries where Skyroam does not work…and Norway was on that list). Solis does not share that on their website. I still think that it is a great company and I will be purchasing the Solis Lite for all future travel. Just hoping to alert other travelers so that they don’t end up like us: in a foreign country with a hotspot and purchased data package and unable to use the hotspot or data package. FYI…some countries that have pretty much wiped out 3G coverage (which means the Skyroam won’t work) include: Norway, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, and Hungary. Hope this info helps!

She will n d to do this with an exam proctoring company where she has to be on camera. I’m not sure how much data/gb this would use for a 2 hr exam, would this be reliable for this scenario?

I see it’s been asked a couple times, but asking one more. Curious how it worked in Baja. My parents live down there part time and I need some better WiFi for remote work/zoom calls. I’ve had my solis all over SE Asia and Japan and it was amazing, but want to know how well it can do in Baja before getting the month pass.
Thanks!!

It did not work very well in the Baja in 2019. Couldn’t get on most of the time. Very disappointing!

I am a fellow Canadian snowbird. Thanks so much. Happy Travels when it’s safe to.

The mediatek chipset at its core takes care of the uninterrupted performance at all times while the orange casing is super attractive and eye catching.
